Bobby Thompson was arguably the best drum instructor in Drum Corps during the late fifties and sixties.

Thompson, perfected and taught the left hand teacup grip, in which the little finger is trained to keep both of its joints bent and the proximal phalange pulled back.[citation needed]

Bobby Thomson was the first to incorporate backsticking[citation needed], in a competing corps, to his Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights drum repertoire.
