The Academy

The Academy is a DCI World Class junior drum corps based in Tempe, Arizona that operates under the umbrella of the Arizona Academy for the Performing Arts. The corps is under the direction of Mark Richardson.

The Academy was originally formed in 2001 as the Arizona Academy Summer Brass and Percussion ensemble. The corps became competitive in 2004, changing their name to The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps. Performing standstill concerts in 2001 and 2002, the corps added a bit of marching in 2003 and a color guard in 2004. The corps' first competitive performance took place on June 19, 2004, in Stockton, California, where the corps received a score of 64.30. Although the corps' 2004 season and tour were relatively short, they were undefeated in Division II during that summer. The group's high score for the season was 75.65. The Corps' first national tour occured in 2006. With their first ever finals performance they won the Spirit of Disney award, high brass, corps director of the year, and even the Division II title. Afterwards, they announced they would commence in Division I competition for the 2007 season. In their first season of Division I standing in 2007, Academy came out strong, placing 13th with their program titled "The Chase."
