Scoring Formulas

The point value of each caption is as shown:

• General Effect Music (EM) - 20 pts
• General Effect Visual (EV) - 20 pts
• Performance Music Brass (MB) - 20 pts
• Performance Music Percussion (MP) - 20 pts
  • Performance Music Percussion Ensemble (PE) - 20 pts
  • Performance Music Percussion Field (PF) - 20 pts
• Performance Music Ensemble (ME) - 20 pts
• Visual Performance (VP) - 20 pts
• Visual Colorguard (VC) - 20 pts
• Visual Ensemble (VE) - 20 pts

The perfect score is 100 points.

In standard shows, the formula for computing the score is as follows: (EM + EV)+ (MB + MP + ME)/2 + (VP + VC + VE)/2 - penalties.

In 2004, DCI decided to split the Performance Music Percussion caption into Percussion Ensemble and Percussion Field, and it will only be used on regional and Finals sheets. So instead of the one Performance Music Percussion score, MP would be the average of PE and PF: (PE + PF)/2.

Ties

In the case of ties for first place at Finals, the captions are then converted to ordinals and added up. The corps with the lowest ordinal sum will be declared the winner.
