[edit] History
The Brampton Police Assoc. and the Town of Brampton wanted to put together a drum corps that would be able to march in the 1967, Brampton's Canada Centennial parade. The Brampton Senators Drum Corps made their debut in that parade with a colour guard & drum line. Brampton, now had their own junior parade corps. The first corps director, who was also instrumental in their start, was Bruce Garrison. Their original uniforms were a medium blue with a gold sash and topped off with a white shako hat. They were a parade corps that marched, primarily in S. Ontario. The black uniforms were obtained in Montreal, after having been used by a one time only drum corps, that Quebec put together for the Montreal Expo '67. In the parade class, the Senators won many 1st place awards in the category of a junior corps, with less than 50 members. The Senators Drum and Bugle Corps executive, over the years, also included: Robert Davis, corps director, Carol Davis, treasurer, Amy Stevens, registrar, Linda Murray, booster club president, and Lew Wagg, who was their first treasurer and partial sponsor. Their first practises were held at the Cal-Dale Shipping yards, which was located on Rosedale Ave., at the end of the cul-de-sac. They occasionally practised their marching, by parading up and down the dead end road. They also helped out the Brampton Police and Firefighters with their marching and parade skills.
In 1972, they moved into the competition circuit, by entering into the Stand-Still (Jr.D) class. In 1973, they made the move up into the Junior C class. The drum corps was sponsored by a number of different organizations over the years including, the Brampton Firefighters, Brampton Police Association, Brampton German Hansa Club, Brampton Legion and also partially funded by the Town of Brampton. In 1976 the City of Brampton, cancelled all funding and the Senators Drum Corps tried to keep going, but eventually disbanded in 1978. In 1980, two former members, Len Kerr & Timothy Stevens, tried to revive the drum corps. They set up a meeting with city officials, local businesses and community organizations hoping to solicit funding or partial sponsorship for the corps. They were, unfortunately, unsuccessful.
With 2008 being almost 40 years since its inception into the junior drum corps scene and 30 years since its demise, there are plans underway for a reunion in August for our former members. If you were a member of the Brampton Senators Drum & Bugle Corps please contact: SenatorsDrumCorps@hotmail.com
