Bobby Thompson was arguably the best drum instructor in Drum Corps during the late fifties and sixties. Bobby Thompson also instructed well into the eighties with The Colonial Musketeers in Hackettstown, NJ. He also had his own line of drum sticks called "Bobby Thompson Specials". They were marked with the letters "BTS" at the back of the stick. They were a limited production and balanced extremely well.

Thompson, perfected and taught the left hand teacup grip, in which the little finger is trained to keep both of its joints bent and the proximal phalange pulled back.[citation needed]

Around 1958, inspired by John Dowlan and his Air Force Drum & Bugle Corps Drum Quartet, Bobby Thomson became the first drum instructor to incorporate backsticking[citation needed], in a competing corps, to his Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights drum repertoire.
