Columnist for Drum Corps World magazine ("Beaver State Beat") 1964-66.

Tillman was a charter member of the Falcons Junior Drum and Bugle Corps sponsored by the Athena, Oregon, American Legion post. The corps stood up in 1959 when Tillman was 11 years old, and originally he marched as a tenor drummer and color guard member. He approached Drum Corps World in 1964, as the magazine carried no coverage of Oregon and little of the Pacific Northwest, and wrote a semi-regular column for two years.

In individual competiton Tillman won state championships playing tenor and rudimental bass 1964-66. He marched with the Flamingo Lancers at AL Nationals in Portland, Oregon, in 1965. They were an amalgum of two Salem and Portland corps, and Tillman filled out the composite horn section.

The DCW columns were Tillman's first published works. Subsequently he became a professional magazine and book author. (Full bio at Wikipedia.)
